What do you need to make your own hand carved hiking sticks? A pocket knife and a walk in the woods. Be sure your knife is solidly built. You don’t need more than a three-inch blade, but it needs to be strong enough that it won’t snap on you when you hit a knot in the wood. A locking blade is a good idea too, if you value your fingers.

What type of wood should you use?? Any type you want, but be aware of the differences. Many people like hardwood hiking sticks because they can be very beautiful once polished up. That’s fine if you don’t mind the extra work it takes to carve hardwoods. Also be aware that they are heavy, better suited for decorating the cabin than for using on long hikes.

One of my favorite trees for carved hiking sticks is poplar. It’s light, and one of the easiest woods to work with. Young poplars often grow in over-crowded stands, so cutting a few out won’t hurt the forest. If you cut it in the spring or early summer, you can almost peel the bark off by hand.

Northern White Cedar is a much tougher wood to carve, but it is beautiful, straight, and one of the lightest. In a cedar swamp, you can find many dead young cedars that have not begun to rot. Cedar lasts forever, it seems, even when used untreated as fence posts.

Making Your Carved Hiking Stick

What if you don’t know your trees? Find a straight young tree in any area that could use thinning, and cut it. A short saw is the easiest way to cut your stick. Otherwise, you can use your knife, by cutting deeper and deeper in a circle around the tree until you can snap it off. Cut the piece a bit longer than you want your finished hiking stick to be.

How long should it be? A general rule is to have the hiking stick come up to just below your armpit. This is a personal thing though. If you want a fancy seven-foot staff, go for it.

Cut away from yourself, removing all the bark. Narrow down the bottom end, but not to a sharp point. You can leave the top flat, round it off, or even carve a spiral design into it. Use you imagination. Almost any piece of sandpaper can be used to smooth it, and you can apply stain or a poly acrylic finish if you want, or just leave it natural.

If you start with green wood, it is best to let it dry for at least a few weeks. Carving it while green can be easier, but it will often twist or bend then as it dries. You might prevent this by tying it to something straight to dry. Each wood is a little different in how it cuts and drys.

I wrap the bottom end with leather (with a small nail to hold it) to keep the stick from splitting. I also usually put a handgrip on it. This can be a piece of cloth or leather. Glue it on or glue and staple it. You can also drill a hole throught the stick near the top, to add a wrist strap.

Get creative. Use a wood burner to add designs to your hiking stick. Drill a hole in the top and glue a glass ball in it. Mark inches on it, so you can measure with it. Some of my best sellers had pewter animals nailed to them. Experimenting is one of the best parts about making your own carved hiking stick.

The Tower of London has a very interesting story behind it. It was begun by a man who was not even English, William of Normandy. At the time he was the cousin of Englands Kind Edward. It all started because William became outraged when Edward backed down on his promise to give the throne to William and ended up giving the throne to his English brother-in-law, Harold. William sailed his army across the English Channel to conquer England. On October 14, 1066, he met Harold at Hastings and conquered him.

On Christmas Day later that year, popularly known as William the conqueror – was crowned King of England. Immediately after William took over as king, he built forts everywhere. One stood in the southeastern corner of London, near an old Roman wall on the north bank of the Thames River. William ordered that this fort be removed in 1078 to be replaced by a huge stone stronghold. This would be the symbol of his power, a fortress for his defense, and a prison for his enemies. He named it the Tower of London.

The Tower was finished twenty years later, rising nearly one hundred feet high, with its walls fifteen feet thick in certain places. Inside were a chapel, apartments, guardrooms, and crypts. The Tower was protected by a wide ditch, a new stone wall, the old Roman wall, and the river. This was done to secure the fact that this tower was a prison that no prisoner would escape from.

In Canada we have become accustomed to subsidized health care, which translates to a cultural norm that we run ourselves until we break, then we go to the doctor and get a cure. Our public health system has been failing to meet those needs and has been the subject of much debate and controversy over privatizing healthcare. It seems that the collective would like things to remain the same, we dont really want to be burdened with the high cost of health, put straight forward to us, we like the pay every month approach, take what you need and give what you can, it seems to appeal to a fairness consciousness.

But for those folks that are not covered under this kind of plan because either your employer doesnt subscribe, you are self-employed, or you do not work outside the home, paying for counselling can be a stopping point to making the first appointment. So why pay for counselling?

Paying for counselling is an investment in yourself, which for many is a huge obstacle in itself. If we recognize that within ourselves we suffer from low self-esteem, or low self worth, then we are stuck in a limited mind set about ourselves that prevent us from putting ourselves first in the order of bill paying. The self limiting beliefs that prevent us from taking a step towards putting money towards our self knowledge and self understanding, are difficult to overcome, and yet we instinctively know that if we dont make changes in ourselves, the patterns of our lives will remain the same.

Whenever we decide to make a change, our being, that works so hard to maintain homeostasis, rebels to this change usually in the form of fear. Fear is experienced in ourselves as anxiety, discomfort, nervousness, feelings that are powerful in convincing us to do nothing, or to try harder without outside paid support. Underlying beliefs about money surface, our poverty consciousness becomes alive and may come to the forefront with thoughts such as: I cant afford to pay to talk to someone. How will I pay for this I might have to give up something. What about my family members, Suzy said she needed new shoes, etc.
Our beliefs about money come from the family in which we were raised and those attitudes. Children know all to well the stress that parents have about money, and whether there will be enough at the end of the month, these attitudes can surface from a family living close to the poverty line, middle class, upper-middle class etc. What children remember and internalize are the feelings surrounding the topic and the conclusion or assumptions that are made about money. A child will do there best to understand everything going on in a family. Poverty consciousness occurs as a result of the idea that there is not enough to go around. This idea, assumption, conclusion, mistaken belief, gets internalized as truth and becomes a belief that we will make true for ourselves again and again.

As adults we cannot ignore other influences into our lives that challenge our belief systems. When we see others that live a life of abundance, feelings of jealousy, envy, and anger may result, because we just dont get how come others have more than we do. If we are accustomed to condemning ourselves, or having that critical mind that limits us in our capabilities, we will fight with our feelings and learn strategies of coping (maybe even addictions) that keep us in the loop of sameness. Confronting mistaken beliefs is really what counselling and therapy is all about.
So, why pay for counselling?
When we take a step towards self-care, when we say to ourselves that something has to change, we are inviting our current map to be made explicit. Counsellors and therapists are professionals of the mind map. They are the outsiders of your creative work that can help you see the errors in perception, the ideas that are keeping you from your best performance. Something that can be extremely difficult for the self observer. When a relationship with a counsellor/therapist is made, you are saying to yourself, I am worth investing into. I have a faint belief that I am capable of more in this life. You may come into counselling feeling broken, but really it is an acknowledgement that some of your ideas may be mistaken beliefs. That is it, simply that maybe along the road to adult life, something you were taught, or learned is not serving you in the way that you would like it to. When you put your money up, your very survival tool, you are really completing an exercise in trust. Trusting that what you put into yourself, you will gain from in the future, and you are so right about that. Paying for counselling is one of the highest respects that we can give ourselves, it is a practical application in going after our dreams and sources of inspiration, when the idea that I am worth it takes hold, there is no telling on what can follow, a life of riches is certainly part of it.
